Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder caused by the impairment of the functioning of the motile cilia present in the human body. Diagnosis of PCD is difficult, not only due to the non-specific symptoms (mainly presenting within the respiratory system), but also due to the large number of genes involved in the pathogenesis of the disease.

The conference is organised within European multidisciplinary project “BEAT-PCD” (COST BM1407, http://www.beatpcd.org/). The project brings together various researchers and physicians from 22 countries, to develop new methods for PCD diagnosis, treatment as well as raising awareness of the disease. Four years of project existence is  summarized during the 4th BEAT-PCD Conference. At the same time, early career researchers and doctors from various countries around the world have the possibility to participate in the 5th PCD Training School.

The conference summarizes the progress of participants’ joint projects, latest achievements in the diagnosis and genetics of PCD and in the broad field of pulmonology and cilia biology. During the Training School, it is possible to participate in numerous specialized workshops lead by PCD experts. These include hands-on workshops on PCD diagnostics (including PCD diagnostic service organization), management, epidemiology and respiratory physiotherapy in PCD.

The event is funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union.
