The latest research findings and information from the World Health Organization (WHO) classify infertility as a social disease affecting 10–18% of couples. It is estimated that the so-called male factor currently accounts for 30–40% of all infertility cases. The Department’s research activities are based on a comprehensive experimental approach to men experiencing reproductive failure, taking their karyotypes into account. The studies include the characterization of the genetic content of germ cells, as well as the epigenetic and biochemical quality of sperm, which are essential for the course of spermatogenesis. The simultaneous assessment of all these parameters and their interrelationships may contribute to the development of new tests evaluating both the structural and regulatory layers of sperm genetic material.
